When Every Day Feels Like a Storm
You Brace Yourself Before Transitions Now
You brace yourself before transitions now. The end of screen time, a change in plans, the wrong cup at dinner, any of it can set off a meltdown that takes over the whole house. You have tried staying calm, giving warnings, offering choices. Some days nothing works, and you are left exhausted and unsure what you are doing wrong.
You did nothing wrong. A meltdown is not misbehavior. It is not a sign of a difficult child. It is what happens when big feelings outrun the skills to manage them. Those skills can be taught.
What ABA Does for Emotional Regulation
Every Behavior Communicates Something
Before we try to reduce a meltdown, we work to understand it. Every behavior communicates something. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst looks closely at what happens right before and after a meltdown to figure out what it is telling us. Is your child overwhelmed, trying to escape a demand, seeking attention, or asking for something they cannot yet name? Once we understand the pattern, we can change it.
From there, we teach replacement skills: ways for your child to ask for a break, express frustration, or self-soothe that work better than a meltdown. We practice these when your child is calm, so the skills are ready when the hard moment comes.
Skills We Help Children Build
Building Skills Before the Hard Moments Come
Finding the triggers
We track when meltdowns happen and what surrounds them. Patterns become visible. Often the trigger is not what it first appears to be.
Teaching a better signal
A child who can ask for a break or point to how they feel has less need to melt down. We teach these replacement skills directly and reward them every time.
Building coping tools
Simple, concrete strategies, like a calm-down routine or a way to request space, give your child something to reach for when feelings rise.
Practicing while calm
New skills do not appear mid-meltdown. We rehearse them during calm moments so they are available when your child needs them most.

Common Questions About Meltdowns and ABA
-
Meltdowns usually happen when a child's emotions outrun their ability to manage them. A BCBA can identify the specific triggers behind your child's meltdowns.
-
Yes. ABA teaches children to recognize triggers and use coping and communication skills in place of meltdowns, practiced until the skills hold.
-
A tantrum is usually goal-driven and stops when the goal is met, while a meltdown is an overwhelmed response to too much input or emotion. ABA can help with both.
