Helping Your Child Build Real Friendships
Hidden Treasures Behavioral Services provides ABA-based social skills therapy for children with autism and ADHD across Greater Los Angeles, teaching skills like sharing, turn-taking, and reading social cues through structured, individualized sessions led by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.
When Connecting Feels Hard
You Have Watched It Happen
at the Park
You have watched it happen at the park. The other kids fall into a game together, and your child stands at the edge, wanting in but not sure how. Maybe they talk at length about a favorite topic without noticing the other child has wandered off. A playdate ends in tears. It is hard to watch. Your child wants connection. Finding it is the struggle.
Social skills are not something every child picks up on their own. For many children with autism or ADHD, the unwritten rules of play and conversation need to be taught directly, in a way that makes sense to them. That is what this work is for.
What Social Skills Therapy Is
Connection Can Be Learned
Social skills therapy at Hidden Treasures uses the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis to teach connection the same way we teach any skill: one clear step at a time, with lots of encouragement. Connection can be learned. A therapist identifies which social skills your child is ready to build next, models them, and practices them in real situations, then reinforces every attempt so your child keeps going.
Because the skills are practiced where your child uses them, at home, at school, and out in the community, they carry into real friendships rather than staying in a therapy room.
Skills We Help Children Build
The Skills Behind Real Friendships
Joining and starting play
Walking up to a group and asking to join is a skill with steps. We break it down. We practice it until approaching other children feels less daunting.
Taking turns and sharing
Waiting and sharing are hard. Impulse control is still growing. We practice these in short, rewarding activities that build tolerance over time.
Reading faces and feelings
Recognizing when a friend is happy, bored, or upset guides how a child responds. We teach children to spot these cues. Then we help them respond.
Holding a conversation
Back-and-forth talking, staying on topic, and listening as well as speaking are practiced directly, so conversations start to flow more naturally.
